Hypnotherapy for smoking Cessation
Does it work?
Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little
(New Scientist, Vol 136 issue 1845 31 Oct 92, page 6).
Research by The New Scientist Magazine (1992) has shown hypnotherapy to be the safest and quickest way to quit smoking. People were six times more likely to quit with one session of hypnosis and remain non-smokers over 12 months after their session, compared to those who used Nicotine Replacement Therapy, such as patches or gum.
Extract from the New Scientist vol 136 issue 1845 p6
To find the most effective method to stop smoking, Frank Schmidt and research student Chockalingham Viswesvaran from the University of Iowa conducted a meta-analysis, bringing together the results of more than 600 studies totalling nearly 72,000 people. The results, which were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology and included 48 studies of hypnosis covering 6000 smokers, clearly showed that hypnosis was three times more effective than Nicotine Replacement.
The advantage of hypnosis is that it removes the dependency and craving of quitting without risking the side effects of rashes and potential long term damage that has been associated with Zyban. Those using nicotine replacement therapy are known to have to try to quit on average six times before succeeding, thereby investing heavily in substitute products and addictive chemicals, before developing a stronger will or abandoning any belief in quitting altogether.
So how does it work?
It is imperative to understand that smoking is a habit and this is what proves to be so difficult to overcome, the ‘addition’, which is to the nicotine in cigarettes, is actually a lot easier to overcome as the nicotine will be out of your system within 72 hours of having your last cigarette, beyond this it is the habit that persists!
Many smokers want to stop smoking, but find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to do so because smoking is a subconscious habit.
Once you become a regular smoker, you no longer smoke on a conscious level. It becomes a subconscious action, which means, by definition, that the conscious mind is no longer in control. Their conscious mind can try as hard as it likes to stop smoking, but the subconscious will carry on the habit because that's what it's been programmed to do.
Hypnosis induces a state of relaxation during which our subconscious mind is highly receptive to new and alternative perspectives and ideas. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring focused state of physical and mental relaxation, it is similar to daydreaming. With hypnosis we can create desired change. This can be achieved because the mind works on two levels the conscious and the unconscious, we make decisions, think and act with our conscious mind and the unconscious mind controls our habits and is home to our memory. In the relaxed state known as hypnosis, we can communicate directly with the unconscious mind and in effect we can re-programme unwanted habits and be more open to positive change.
It is very important to emphasise that you are always in control, always in the driving seat. The old myths and misconceptions about hypnosis have given way to proven scientifically sound applications..
So hypnotherapy can be a very effective treatment for smoking cessation usually in just one session.
It's important to stress that clients have to want to stop smoking for hypnotherapy to work, rather than just thinking that they should stop. If you aren’t committed then you are just wasting your money. Stop Smoking therapy is extremely effective, but it's not magic. However, if you want to give up smoking then you will.

What do people say?
I was a sixty a day smoker when I went to see Carole, my daughter, who was 8 at the time, was always begging me to stop. I had tried to stop many times before without success. But after just one hypnotherapy session I was a non smoker. It was a really pleasant experience. You have to want to stop but I found quitting pretty easy, it is really hard to explain but it certainly worked for me. After the treatment when I got home my daughter took my cigarettes and crushed them, and none of us have looked back. Now six years later I am a confirmed non smoker and very grateful to Carole for literally changing our lives.
